Italian Car Day

Brooklands Italian Car Day: Fiats

May 16, 2022 By pete

Welcome to Brooklands.

Story and Photos by Jonathan Sharp

When visiting the annual Italian Car day at Brooklands (April 30) you really do need to keep circulating the site, as cars come and go throughout the day. Some stay all day, some for just a few hours, owner’s club groups meet up and picnics get laid out. During lunchtime a group of vehicles selected by the event sponsor Auto Italia Magazine, ranging from Abarth Grand Prix to a Ferrari SF90, took to the adjacent Mercedes Benz World Test track for some demo laps in front of a large crowd that had crossed the river Wey to join them.

Brooklands Italian Car Day 2022

The following articles contain no production numbers, with one or two exceptions, no chassis numbers, no race histories and no illustrious drivers, bar one. Just photographs of the sort of Italian cars you rarely see this days. Where might one see such an event? Brooklands, for the Italian Car day held on Saturday the 30th April. The right crowd, well they like Italian cars, but there was some crowding.

Brooklands Italian Car Day

A huge thank you to our friends at Auto Italia magazine for making the Brooklands Italian Car Day happen, and for the loan of a hi viz tabard (high level photo pass) to allow me to take shots during the lunch time demo sessions on the Mercedes Benz World test track.

As the Editor pointed out last week, there are three or events that attract rare Italian cars; Concorso Italiano in the US, Milano AutoClassica in Italy, the even larger Auto Moto d Epoca in Padua, and the Brooklands Italian Car Day in the UK. I have covered the UK event now for many years, and it is always a joy.

Brooklands Italian Car Day, 2019

May 4, 2019 Brooklands

Driving into the designated Alfa Romeo parking zone at the Brooklands circuit brought to my mind the long-term car park at Turin airport, except that the Turin long term car park nowadays is full of Kias and Volkswagens, not Fiats and Alfas.

Passing through the gate at Brooklands into the museum, this year we Alfa drivers had our own entrance, which avoided the queue at the Campbell gate. The Alfa section was 360 degrees of Alfas, so I placed my creaky old GT Blackline next to another GT. [Read more…] about Brooklands Italian Car Day, 2019

Italian Car Day at Brooklands, Part 2

In a coral full of newer and rather too noisy modern Lamborghinis it was great to see this rather elegant Islero taking pride of place in front of the new 4D Theatre.

VeloceToday is about Italian and French cars. Italian cars, we got. Jonathan Sharp went to Brooklands to find a huge variety of Italians, some as rare as honest politicians. The editor has not seen an Alfetta sedan since he sold his in 1983. And how about that Moretti, or the Quattroporte 3? Part 2 continues Sharp’s venture into the world of “haven’t seen one like that for years!”

Italian Car Day at Brooklands

This 1965 Fiat 850 Coupe benefited from spending the first 50 years of her life enjoying Italian Sunshine. Behind on the banking is a rather more recent baby performance Fiat, namely a 100 HP Panda. To the left of the shot is an even quicker Fiat, or should I say 500 Abarth.

On Saturday April 30, the gates to the Brooklands circuit were opened at 8am to let in the first arrivals for the annual Italian Car day. I am told those early arrivals had started to queue at around 6.30 am. Such is the popularity of this annual event which is now in its 31st year.
