Lewis Hamilton was making the rounds late Saturday suggesting that rumors of McLaren’s demise this season where vastly exaggerated.

There is an old lesson in racing that you don’t necessarily need to be the fastest car out there to win, you just need to be the first to cross the finish line.  Mark Webber drew a line under that statement with his uneventful win at the Hungaroring.  It really wasn’t his race to win, but it was his team mate Vettel’s to lose.  And lose he did. The young German seemed to have the race in the bag with a strong pole performance and outstanding opening laps.   [Read more…] about Hungarian Grand Prix

The recent unscheduled flight of Mark Webber’s Red Bull highlighted at least two issues:

One, that the new regulations which were put in place for increased cockpit safety measures were certainly worthwhile; and two, Mark Webber has been involved in an increasing number of incidents.

McLaren Tops China in the Rain
By Erik Nielsen

There were two camps that were excited about the race in Shanghai this weekend. McLaren was able to capitalize on tire strategy and left the field behind by finishing one-two. The race promoters were also excited because with the rain, the camera angles were low and no one really should have noticed that the stands were empty, except on the main straight. If you Tivo’d the race, go back and compare it to the first couple of years that the race was held there. See anything missing? People maybe?

Jenson Button had his laughs on his old team as to why he didn’t stick around at Brawn by winning the Australian Grand Prix with the McLaren team. The reigning world champion was able to capitalize on the decision to go out on slicks ahead of the field and put the cruise control on.

The Inter-Seasonal Sounds of Fury

Well, well, well. This may be the first inter-season in a long time to prove more thrilling, exciting and dramatic than the racing season itself. Last month in Part 1, we used the words “staccato of events” to describe the early post-season events. Now, we need to use something much stronger like “major news releases at maximum revs.” And that’s 19,000 rpms as befits F1. Let’s hear these latest loud sounds of fury; we suggest wearing earplugs.

In order of amplitude:

* Schumi is back. Great blasts of trumpets and fireworks! Anybody who would have predicted this in writing six months ago would have quickly been taken to the loony house (next to Max Mosley’s favorite club). [Read more…] about The Inter-Seasonal Sounds of Fury

Massa
Massa on the podium: second is not enough.

By Pete Vack

Erik Nielsen was unable to travel to Germany this weekend.

July 20th 2008, Hockenheim, Germany

The German Grand Prix was not a good race for Ferrari. It was not a good race for Massa. It was not a good race for Kimi. Ferrari still leads the Constructors race by a good margin, but the recent on-track performance of the team belies the mere numbers.
