Graham Gauld: Mini Autobiography Part 1

January 16, 2023 By pete

Graham Gauld with his partner Jane Wallis-Hosken at the Portimao historics in Portugal.

Story and photos by Graham Gauld

It is hard to believe, but by the time you read this it will have been seven months since Jane and I turned in the key to the house, got a lift to the Nice airport and flew to London, leaving behind 27 years’ worth of memories of living in the South of France, in easy driving distance from Nice, Cannes, Monaco and Ventimiglia on the Italian border. Four weeks earlier I had celebrated the 70th anniversary of my first work as a motoring journalist at the age of 17.

Why am I telling you all this? Well Editor Pete Vack thought it would be a good idea to explain how it has been settling down in the country of one’s roots, after being away for close on thirty years. My life, so far, can be split into three parts so let’s start with the first part.

Maseratis at the Factory in Color, Circa 1963

September 8, 2020 By pete

And what have we here? The Maserati factory circa 1963 was full of surprises.

From the Archives, October, 2014

VeloceToday reader David Hewitt ads his impressions of his time in Europe in 1963, and a visit to Maserati. While trying to identify the cars in Hewitt’s photos, we stumbled across two rare and interesting cars once owned by John Simone, head of Maserati-France. But before we get that, David’s photos of the Nurburgring are equally fascinating and all in color!

David Hewitt’s father was an Air Force pilot stationed in Europe from 1960 to 1964. Hewitt was only 15 when his family lived in France for the first year and Germany for the remaining years. Hewitt recalls those years:

Graham Gauld at Maseratil, 1957-1960

April 4, 2017 By pete

From the Archives: VeloceToday contributor Graham Gauld takes us back to the Maserati factory in 1957, 1958, and 1960. Says Gauld “Little was I to realize it at the time but in three of my earliest visits to Maserati I was actually witnessing the slow rundown of the business which led to administration and then to reformation. These were hectic days at Maserati but also days of great enthusiasm to build racing cars and develop the road cars that temporarily saved the company.” We present these great photos by year. Enjoy!

And what have we here? The Maserati factory circa 1963 was full of surprises.

This week we feature the first of four visits to the Maserati factory. Next week, Graham Gauld recalls the works in the years 1957, 1958 and 1960, while this week, VeloceToday reader David Hewitt ads his impressions of his time in Europe in 1963, and a visit to Maserati.
