Gauld: Sleuthing around Silverstone

September 11, 2023 By pete

The prettiest Maserati, the 1936 4CM as driven by Goffredo Zehender in period.

Story and photos by Graham Gauld

As is my wont I embarked on a five-hour drive from my new home in isolated Cornwall to Silverstone for the Classic. Last year I could leave the house in the south of France, drive an hour to Nice airport, wait an hour, fly to Luton airport, rent a car and drive to Silverstone in less time than my drive from Cornwall!

As usual my idea was to prowl the paddock, chat to people and come up with one or two interesting snippets for VeloceToday.

Old Friends at Silverstone

Eddie McGuire and the ex-Archie Butterworth Bentley.

Story and photos by Graham Gauld

Normally the BRDC Silverstone Classic is my special three-day event, but this year I could only spend one day there and so did not see half of the cars that turned up. However, I did meet up with two old pals who each had a story to tell.

Monaco Historic Grand Prix by Vanhoolandt

May 29, 2018 By pete

Story and photos by Hugues Vanhoolandt

Organized the first time in 1997, this year the Monaco Historic Grand Prix celebrated its 11th edition on May 12-13. Five Series (classes) covered the first 30 years of the Formula One World Championship, from 1950 to 1980. The two remaining Series were for the Pre-war Grand Prix cars and for front engine sports racing cars, in memory of the 1952 Monaco Grand Prix run for sports cars. Gordini, Driven!

Read Part 1

Read Part 2

As it happened, I test drove the Gordini at Silverstone on the same day as I had driven an F2 Ferrari 500, both cars having been raced by some of the most charismatic drivers ever to get behind the wheel of any racing car. Both cars had Maurice Trintignant connections, but the Gordini had led Le Mans with Jean Behra in this very seat…can you get your head around that?!
