Now well into its fourth decade, the Victorian Historic Racing Register’s Phillip Island Classic saw drivers and teams out in force, enjoying four very warm days on southern Australia’s sweeping 5km circuit. The track, resurfaced last year in time for the national Superbike Championships a month ago, and using 60% recycled asphalt, promised new lap records against the possibility of increased tyre wear.

Overseas cars were back at the island on March 9-12 after an absence of almost three years, for the Southern Hemisphere’s largest historic and classic race meeting. There were Formula 1 and Sports Cars from the United Kingdom and Europe, and Californians Ernie and Elaine Nagamatsu returned with Old Yeller 2 to enjoy more laps of the 4.4km (2.7mi) circuit with the immediate post-war sports and racing cars. After last year’s restrictions, spectators were back at the Victorian Historic Racing Register’s Phillip Island Classic, held on the sweeping circuit south of Melbourne. The perfect weather and long weekend holiday also saw over 400 entries, but shipping issues meant they were an all-Australian affair, although several overseas drivers had made the journey down to the sun.

Thursday was for free practice, the extra track time valuable to those who had missed last year’s competitor-only meeting. On Friday morning further practice and qualifying was followed by the first of the Regularity events and racing categories. [Read more…] about Phillip Island Classic, Australia, 11-13 March

Phillip Island Classic, Australia, 9-11 March 2018

Australia’s largest historic race meeting, organized by the Victorian Historic Racing Register, is held annually at the flowing Phillip Island circuit south of Melbourne. Decibels were in order all weekend, this year being the 50th anniversary of Formula 5000. Nine cars from New Zealand arrived to contest the International Challenge, reminiscent of the Tasman Series of the 60’s and 70’s where Grand Prix drivers from Europe enjoyed summer sun in the two countries during the northern winter’s off-season. Cubic inches certainly had the headlines at the 27th Phillip Island Classic, south of Melbourne, recently. Not only were there more than two dozen Formula 5000 open wheelers racing during the three day meeting, the Group Q & R ‘big banger’ sports car grids included five McLarens, (three of them 8 liter Chev-powered), several Lolas, a six liter E-Type Jaguar and a pair of V8 Elfins. Phillip Island Classic, Australia

March 21, 2013 By pete

Usually the scream of a high-revving V12 engine shouts “Italian”, but the best sounds from the track at this year’s Phillip Island Classic Festival of Motorsport (March 8-10) were from a pair of Matra Simcas. Brought to the Classic by father and son team of Hall & Hall (UK), chassis #1 and #5 each had Le Mans credentials, third places at the 1973 and 1974 24-hour enduro, to go with the sound. They were up against some stiff opponents in the featured ‘International Sportscar Challenge’ races, giving away hundreds of cubic inches to the Can-Am opposition.
