thanks once again fo your excellent detective work. Reviewing my own database, I found a reference to a Ferrari 500 Mondial with starting number #47 that raced at Elkhart Lake. There is a photo evidence in the ‘Official Year Book 1957′ on page 28 that shows Robert Tappan’s Mondial . Based on the other photos shown, it’ clear that this race was on 10 September 1955. But in the entry list, the Mondial is listed with start number #46. In fact, he had a second car at the start that, namely his Austin Healey with number #47. We don’t know, why he changed the numbers. But I think this could be the solution.
September 10, 1955 – Elkhart Lake, Race 3 EM+FM 100 miles – #47 Robert Tappen – Ferrari 500 Mondial s/n 0506 MD.

Alan, thanks for the additional info. As I was going through the Cavallinos, I was reminded of all the stunning features you did for the magazine. They were superb. Are you still contributing to Cavallino?

Any idea of how the damage shown in the photo occurred to 0506 MD?

Pete
