Practical Classics at the NEC Birmingham, UK

March 30, 2026 By pete

Sud Super sorta sums it all up.

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

After the perceived glamour of Retromobile Paris, it was time for a trip up the M40 to the NEC in Birmingham for the ‘Practical Classics Magazine’s Classic Car and Restoration Show’, an event that is more boiler suits than Armani suits but just as enjoyable. Unlike other classic car shows such as Retro, at the Practical Classics show the attendees manning the club stands are welding spanners rather than just drinking tea and chatting, while in Paris they sip wine; it is all very hands on and grass roots.

Italian Car Day: Alfa, Lancia, Maserati

May 8, 2023 By pete

Alfa Romeo Giulia enjoys the shade offered Vickers Vanguard G-APEP (EP). EP first flew from Brooklands on the 29th November 1961, joining BEA (British European Airways) on the 13th December of that year. After 9 years of passenger service EP was converted into a Merchantman before re-entering service carrying freight in the early 1970s, retiring on the 30th September 1996.

This year’s Auto Italia Italian car day, held on April the 29th at Brooklands in Surrey was, as you can see from the number of people in the background of many of the shots, particularly popular with the general public. When I arrived just after the museum had opened the place was already filling up nicely.

London Concours: Lancias and Hot Rods

September 1, 2020 By pete

This line up alone was probably worth the price of admission.

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

The London Concours; at last a classic car event to attend, my first since Retromobile in February, and by the time it came around I would have been happy just to photograph a field of Morris Minors. But as you will see in the following photographs there was not a Morris to be seen.

Lancia 037 and S4

Lancia 037 at a recent meet.

Story and Photos by Hugh Doran

Ever since Lotus boss Colin Chapman took out a competition license in the name of “Gold Leaf Team Lotus”: motorsport has been a rather colorful sport. Today we are well used to seeing racing cars painted in the colors of all manner of various products. Looking back over the years there have been some bad paint jobs on the cars, but there have also been some good ones. Then there are the ones that really stand out. One such livery is the Martini colors worn by Lancia in the World Rally Championship
