Road America June Sprints, 23-24, 1956

After an exuberant late 1955, an abbreviated time to sit back and smell the roses was shortened even more when the Chicago Region SCCA received approval to hold two race weekends at Road America, the first on June 23 – 24, 1956 and another on September 8 – 9. If that wasn’t ambitious enough, the National Association for Stock Car Racing’s (NASCAR) Grand National Series secured a race date in August. Clearly all involved, Clif Tufte and his extended team, local merchants and SCCA officials, had their winter hours spoken for to assure competing drivers and their respective teams, area merchants and attending fans from across the Midwest and beyond had safe, enjoyable and profitable summer. NASCAR at Road America

On the weekend of August 11-12, 1956 a NASCAR group of mostly good ‘ol southern boys took to Road America in two events. On Saturday a 100 mile race for European and American cars under 3.5 liters and Sunday the 250 mile feature for American made stock cars. Saturday’s grid had a mixture of small European sedans, an American Studebaker and one Jaguar VII Saloon, the latter driven to victory by NASCAR’s Paul Goldsmith.

Allen R. Kuhn: Maserati 150S, 200S, 450S

Story and photos by Allen R. Kuhn

It’s time to dust off the old negs, with a camel hair brush, I might add. The ones that seem to want attention are from my Maserati archives. That’s good because they were some of my favorites. What drew me to them was their beautiful lines and stunning sounds. Another thing that drew them to me happened in 2007 at the Automobilia Monterey event during the August Car Week.

During the 1961 season Chuck was mostly involved with development work on Scarab’s new aluminum Buick V8 engine, although he raced one of the old Scarab sportsracers twice for new owner George Lehmann in the West Coast series. He retired both at Riverside and Laguna Seca.

Chuck’s next event was also USAC sanctioned, a 3-heat Formula Libre race at Lime Rock in July 1959. Lucky Casner’s CAMORADI team had entered a 1957 Maserati 250F, acquired by Casner from Joakim Bonnier that summer. It was the very car in which Juan Manuel Fangio had won the 1957 German Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, while Bonnier had captured the 1958 Watkins Glen Formula Libre race with it.

Chuck Daigh Part 2

May 12, 2020 By pete

Chuck Daigh, voted ‘Fastest U.S. race driver of 1960” by Road & Track, always considered himself a mechanic first and foremost, but invitations to race were welcome. (Bob D’Olivo)

Story by Willem Oosthoek

In Part 1, Daigh had gone from racing for Ford, then to GM, then back to Ford in those days before the major manufacturers pulled out of racing. Then along came Lance…

The second Ford spell did not last long. By September 1957 Daigh was hired away by Lance Reventlow’s organization for the Scarab project. Chuck was a perfect choice; he understood the blueprinting process needed for mechanical work and had experience with the new 327 ci Chevy engines in Atlanta.

Chuck Daigh, West Coast Whiz Kid

Story by Willem Oosthoek

In the annals of motor racing history, the name Chuck Daigh will always be linked to that of the Scarab, the first U.S. built sportsracer to beat the best that Europe had to offer. Multi-talented, Daigh excelled as a race driver, an engine builder and all-round chief mechanic. In fact, he saw himself more as a race mechanic than a driver. In a 2000 interview Chuck mentioned: “I always got a lot more thrill out of working on a car, putting it together and seeing it work. I used to get bored sometimes during a race. I’d much rather chase somebody, but I would get in front and just fiddle around.”

And How! More on Bill Pollack

August 1, 2017 By pete

Pebble Beach 1952. Bill Pollack is about to win first overall in the most famous Cad-Allard of West-Coast sports car racing – here he’s about to pass Sam Weiss in the XK-120. The cars have just turned onto the main or pit straight and are coming out of a slight left hand bend. From here it is full throttle for a moment or two and then a very high speed bend just past the pits and a hard stop for a 90° right hand turn. Credit corsa@corsaresearch.com

Last week we published a tribute to the late Bill Pollack, and following that we received more interesting photos and comments, which deserve to be published as well. Ergo, here is a bit more about Bill Pollack with some rare images. But first, a few comments from our readers: [Read more…] about And How! More on Bill Pollack
