Mercedes-Benz won their first F1 race since 1955. That in itself is surprising, but the most significant aspect of their victory was the long struggle to achieve a true Mercedes-Benz win. The difficulties in succeeding in F1 today (already noted with great loss of dollars by Toyota, Jaguar, Honda, Porsche and others), demolished the tradition of German engineering supremacy, a shock and awe technique which once caused fear and loathing in its competitors.

McLaren Tops China in the Rain

There were two camps that were excited about the race in Shanghai this weekend. McLaren was able to capitalize on tire strategy and left the field behind by finishing one-two. The race promoters were also excited because with the rain, the camera angles were low and no one really should have noticed that the stands were empty, except on the main straight. If you Tivo’d the race, go back and compare it to the first couple of years that the race was held there. See anything missing? People maybe?

I can remember in the late 90s when Ferrari wasn’t on the top of their game and the faithful tifosi would pray that it would rain so a certain Herr Schumacher could drive an underperforming car to victory.
